Class Description

Description

What you'll learn in this acrylic painting class:

Painting I, Acrylic is the introduction to the fundamentals of painting. We warmly recommend taking this course prior to any other painting course, even if your ultimate medium of choice is oil. Acrylics are fast drying, water-based paints, and will allow for quicker exploration of various approaches to painting.  Because of this, technical rules and planning process are (unlike with oils) virtually nonexistent in this course.

This said, the course will provide an in-depth introduction to color theory and invite students to begin to think about composition not just in terms of form and value but also with regard to color. As there is no one ‘right way’ to paint, we shall actively explore a variety of ways to begin and develop a painting, through hands-on investigation of concepts and techniques that these processes entail: tonal (under)painting, block-out (under)painting, wash, direct painting, layering, impasto, glazing, scumbling, dry-brushing, painting sgraffito, etc. Incorporated in these processes are various technical questions that will also be answered:  we shall learn about canvases, primers, stretchers, brushes, palette knives and other tools, paints, pigments, mediums, and more.

Oils are back! There is a revival of interest in oils, and we understand why you are eager to jump into exploring this beautiful medium. However, if you you are entirely new to painting, we recommend (but don’t require) working with acrylics first. (Should you wonder why, please read the course description for Acrylics I.)

The course will commence with an introduction to the medium. Students will learn the rules for proper usage and develop an understanding of the chemistry of the medium (in layman terms) for easier manipulation. As in the Acrylics I course, students will learn hands-on different ways in which one may start and develop a painting. (If you have worked with acrylics before, you will be able to appreciate the differences between the mediums: you will discover what oils allow for that acrylics do not, and vice versa.

You may also decide to combine techniques—of course, in the correct manner.)

You will receive an email with the information about materials when you register.

Refund Policy

You may cancel your reservation up to 11 business days prior to the start time of the course.

  • You may choose to be refunded less a 10% processing fee.

  • No one will be refunded after this. No one will be refunded twice in a row.

Question from Brenda L.
I am wondering if materials are provided or we bring our own. I saw there was a materials list but it was not clear whether it was provided or we bring it ourselves. I have no problem bringing my own. I apologize for what might be obvious.
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Students must bring their own materials for the Painting I: Acrylics & Oils you're enrolled in. Here are some other reminders for the class: - Please arrive 5-10 min early to set up your working space; instructors will start their lectures promptly at the beginning of each class. - Please try not to come in nice clothes. They have aprons, but accidental splashes do occur. You will receive an email with more in-depth information about materials when you register. Kindly check your spam folder for a possibility that the email was directed there.

Question from Anonymous
Hello is there parking?
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
The studio does not have its own parking. There is street parking in front of the studio ($2 an hour), but all parking west of Broadway (the next block) should be free. The school is also on the same block as red line Granville stop. Hope this helps!

Question from anonymous
I am confused about how much of the class deals with acrylics and how much is oils. It says “oil and acrylic” but also says it recommends taking an acrylic class first. As it seems unclear, any information on this would be greatly appreciated. I am interested in the course, as I want to get into oil painting and have recently purchased my own oil paints. I am also open to trying acrylic but I don’t yet have any paints. Is there a material supply list I will need to purchase somewhere?
Answer from Georgia C. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi there! The students should choose oils OR acrylics. In the class, you will talk about both, and what the differences are- but each student should concentrate on working with one medium throughout the course. If the student has no experience at all, the school recommends working with acrylics first.
