What you'll learn in this oil painting class:

Create paintings in oils using non-toxic mediums as the Renaissance painters did. Choose to paint from still life arrangements or material you bring in. We will also paint from a clothed model for two sessions. We will have 1:1 and group critiques. Some prior drawing recommended. 

Bring Materials to the first class:

  • Brushes: 2-4 Flats, Brites, or Rounds-bristle brushes, synthetic/mix #2, 4, 6, 10, or 12 Utrecht, Winsor & Newton 
  • 3” House Painting Brush-if Priming Canvas
  • Palette-wood, glass, metal or plastic box-Select one
  • Palette Knives- Wood handle with metal trowel for mixing
  • Gesso -quart or half gallon (if preparing your own)
  • 1-3 Prepared canvasses on stretcher bars with keys or add
  • 1/8 “ masonite wood corner supports 9 x 12 inch or larger
  • 1/2” Wire brad nails- to attach corner supports
  • Sand paper-fine
  • Containers for mediums: metal can or glass or heavy plastic
  • Smock or Apron
  • Paper towels or rags
  • B & J Brush Cleaner & Preserver
  • The Masters Green bar soap for hands

OIL PAINTS (Utrecht, Winsor & Newton, The Art Treehouse and others comparable)

  • Titanium White
  • Cadmium Yellow Lt or Md.
  • Cadmium Red Light*
  • Alizarin Crimson*
  • Cerulean Blue
  • Ultramarine Blue
  • Viridian Green
  • Hookers or Sap Green
  • Raw Sienna
  • Burnt Sienna

To Avoid Cadmium:
Oils from The Art Treehouse have some cadmium-free oils as does Blick 

Select one to start. Add Later: Yellow Ochre Phthalo Blue Ultramarine Violet Phthalo. Green Green Earth Hue Cobalt Blue 

OIL MEDIUM (All below are non-toxic) 

  • Gamblin Solvent free Gel –Available at Blick 
  • Oil of Spike Lavender– use a drop next to your paints, or mixed with paints. Can replace the use of turpentine. 
  • Walnut painting Gel (water washed) a slightly shiny medium, mix small amount into paints. Yellows less than linseed oil. –Purchase: Oil of Spike and Walnut painting gel from The Art Treehouse online
  • Turpenoid Natural (nontoxic from Weberart.com–Brush cleaner, when used with paint use only 25% or less available at Blick Or 
  • Biobased Artist thinner from The Art Treehouse -for thinning paints & cleanup Acrylic Gesso for priming canvases 
  • Container for Medium

Refund Policy
Tuition is refundable for Adult and YFA (Youth Fine Arts) classes, minus a processing fee for each class dropped, only if the EAC Registrar is notified by or on the next working day after the first class has met. Workshop fees (minus a processing fee) are refundable up until one week prior to the program. 

If the Director of IT and Administration is notified at least one week prior to the scheduled start date, a processing fee of $50 is charged for dropping adult classes, YFA classes, or workshops costing $100 or more or a $25 processing fee is charged for dropping programs costing under $100. 

A processing fee equal to 50% of the tuition is charged for adult or YFA classes and camps that are dropped during the period from six days before the first class meets and the next working day after the first class has met (workshop fees are not refundable during this period). Please refer to the chart below. 

Students are responsible for notifying the Art Center Director of IT and Administration that they wish to drop a class or workshop; not attending class does not constitute an official withdrawal from courses or cancellation of tuition or fees. If you must drop a class or workshop after the deadline, no refunds will be given. 

There is no deferred, reduced or pro-rated tuition. Membership is non-refundable. There are no exceptions to the Evanston Art Center refund policy.

*The first session is defined as the first day a class or workshop meets (not the first class or workshop attended).  

**To avoid paying the processing fee, students may elect to receive a full tuition credit for classes or workshops dropped seven days or more before the first session. Tuition credit will expire one year from the date the class or workshop is dropped and must be used in full for EAC class and/or workshop tuition. After the credit is redeemed, no further refund options will be available. 

Tuition credits are not redeemable for cash under any circumstances. Credits may be transferred to another individual only with written notice.
