What you'll learn in this philosophy class:

Long before telescopes and particle accelerators, humans dove deep into their direct experience of self and world in search of understanding. One result was the stream of practices and metaphysics called yoga.

Many of claims of the yoga tradition do not fit within the objective discourse of modern science. Nevertheless, there are many intriguing parallels between the yogic and scientific maps of the cosmos.
In this series, we will read the book Journey of the Universe and explore the fruitful intersections of science with yoga practice and philosophy. We will use yoga to embody the implications of science, and science to enrich the meanings of yoga. The intention is to draw power and understanding from both traditions so that we can better serve this crucial moment in planetary history.

Topics may include:
  • Pulsation: Star formation, supernovae, and breathing
  • Earth bodies: What does it mean that we are made of earth?
  • Solar power: Our relationship to the sun within and without
  • Who am “I”?: Challenges to the atomistic view of the self
