What you'll learn in this nature class:

Get the skills you need to build a “sure-fire” campfire in this hands-on workshop. In addition to instruction on proper materials and construction techniques, it will also cover a number of ways to start a fire using tools ranging in skill level from a primitive bow-drill to a flint and steel to a BIC lighter.

For millennia, fire has been an elemental survival tool of the human species.  Unfortunately, in modern times most of us have lost our connection with this essential skill.  A campfire can keep us warm, cook our food, make a dark night bright, or signal for help if necessary.  But most often it simply provides a sense of security in a wilderness setting and serves as an invitation for friends and family to gather.

Come out and...

  • Learn the materials and construction techniques that lead to  a successful fire
  • Get a variety of fire-starting tips and tricks
  • Gain a respect for fire as a gift
  • Understand fire safety to protect yourself--and your surroundings
  • Watch a demonstration with the primitive fire-starting tool called a bow-drill
  • Build and start your own fire using a flint and steel
  • Enjoy the fruits of your efforts by roasting marshmallows and chatting with the instructor after class.
  • Supplies for S’mores will be provided!

NotesHeld outdoors. Dress for the weather. Bring water, some note-taking material, and snacks if you like to nibble. Be prepared to kneel on the ground for an extended period and walk on uneven surfaces.
