What you'll learn in this encaustic class:

This 3 hour workshop is an overview of Encaustic painting. Participants will learn the fundamentals of working in this medium and will have a chance to explore multiple techniques. We will learn how to melt, mix, and apply the wax to create smooth and textured surfaces as well as how to incise the wax to create intricate drawings. Collage and photocopy transfers are additional ways to play with this medium. We will discuss how to set up your own space for painting with encaustic including ventilation, safety, and tools. Through demonstration, discussion and hands-on exploration, students will come away with an encaustic painting and will be able to continue on their own. A small class size insures that everyone gets personal attention.

Materials to Bring:
Please wear old clothes and shoes, or bring an apron. Bring photos (not glossy), sketches, paper, or other items to collage (optional). Students are also required to pay a $20 materials fee in cash directly to the instructor at the workshop.

The Material fee includes:

2 small wood panels, Wax paint, Wax medium, Cleaning wax, Oil sticks, small brushes, incising tool, razor blades and Latex gloves.

Question from Alice V.
Can I bring my own wood panel (36"x48") + collage and create my own painting during the session? I'm beginner :)
Answer from mari r.
I don't advise this for several reasons. You mention that you are a beginner and I think it will be a bit overwhelming to undertake such a big board right from the get-go. The other factor is that we occupy a relatively small work-space and there wouldn't be enough room to accommodate such a large board when there are other students working as well.
Answer from mari r.
I want to add that the class materials fee is based on the amount of paint needed for the 2 small boards and a larger panel would require an increase in the fee. There are many techniques to explore and I would encourage trying them before venturing out to a specific outcome. I hope you will explore this fun medium.

Good overview and introduction. Teacher is nice. I wish she was more hands on with advice and guidance along the way— I found replicating the basic technique cleanly a bit challenging. Time should have been managed better—we barely had time to start the second panel.

This class was a great introduction to encaustic paintings for someone who knows very little about the topic. The class is spit into instructional and hands on portions (the whole evening went by quickly!). Participants leave with one or two panels, depending on how much time you want to spend exploring different methods. The instructor was friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. I would recommend this class to anyone.
