Class Description

Description

What you'll learn in this furniture class:

You will gain a broad understanding of how Japanese woodworking distinguishes itself from Western approaches during this two hour talk and demonstration. The session will include an overview of traditional hand tools used in a range of work scale, from making small objects to full size timber frame building. 

This will be followed by a brief demonstration of the use of all basic tools: 
  • nomi (chisel)
  • kanna (plane)
  • nokogiri (saw) 
and marking tools including:
  • sashigane (square)
  • sumitsubo (ink line).
Important Things to Note:
Everyone will be invited to pull a Japanese plane and make a thin wood shaving. A short history will be given along with key design element and aesthetic preferences. Joinery will be discussed with samples to handle.

Are materials provided and included in cost of the class? Yes.
Students will be introduced to Tools and how to use them. No materials needed to bring for this course.

Refund Policy

No refunds for no shows.

  • For cancellations more than 16 business days before class date, student can be refunded payment amount minus 13% processing fee OR receive full payment amount as credit toward another class.
  • For cancellations 16 to 11 business days before class date, student can receive payment amount as credit toward another class.
  • No refunds or credit available for cancellations less than 11 business days before class.

In any event where a customer wants to cancel their enrollment and is eligible for a full refund, a 5% processing fee will be deducted from the refund amount.
