Mirta

Teaches at The League of Kitchens

Mirta was born in the mountainous region of Mendoza, Argentina, which is most well-known for its wines and gorgeous landscapes. She grew up learning to cook from her grandmother, who cooked for a family-owned hotel in Mendoza, as well as from her Argentinian mother and Italian father. Mirta moved to the US in 1975 and has lived in NYC with her daughter ever since. For many years she worked as the personal assistant to a songwriter and philanthropist, planning and managing elaborate events for world leaders, politicians, musicians, and actors. Later in life, Mirta developed her own line of artisanal membrillo (quince paste and jelly) and Argentinian sweets, and she now makes and distributes them to restaurants and shops in the tri-state area. When she’s not cooking, Mirta loves to pursue her passions for art and music. She enjoys making masks and collecting Argentinian art, and she inherited her Italian grandfather’s love for opera.

    The instructor was lovely, and her knowledge not just of the cooking, but of the regions and wines of Argentina were a delight. She was in her home kitchen, and at the end, her daughter and husband came to share the meal! It felt very relaxed and unintimidating, while the cooking was incredible - a woman who has grown up with these foods, and knows the ins and outs and little tricks and tips for success. These courses also have a person called a supporter, who is indispensable to the quality of the course, ensuring that if people have questions, the chef knows that, and repeating any parts of the recipe that might be confusing. The experience was wonderful from start to finish, and my husband and I both had a great time!

    This felt like a visit to a friend's home more than a class. I learned so much about Argentinian culture as well as the food. It was very easy to follow the recipes and everything was delicious. Mirta's love of cooking, people and her country come through and made this a wonderful experience.
