Teaches at You Should Be Dancing

Born and raised in Argentina, Valeria Solomonoff is an award winning choreographer and dancer who has appeared in film, off Broadway and internationally. Since her tango beginnings, Ms. Solomonoff has been intrigued by the roles’ interplay tango dance exposes. Her reactions have ranged from challenging them (with the creation of TangoMujer), exploring them (with her traditional tango work) and finding drama and humor in the mix-up of expectations (Her shows: Tango Intimo and Tango por Ellos). Her performances and choreographies have been extensively praised by publications as diverse as The New York Times, The Washington Post and Die Tageszeitung. Valeria is the creator and director of “Tango por Ellos”, a show that received the 2010 ACE Award for best choreography. She also was creator, director and a dancer in “Tango Intimo”, an Off Broadway Show nominated for two ACE awards for best direction and best production. She was the choreographer and a dancer in the film “The Caller,” starring Frank Langella and Elliott Gold. She was the choreographer of the plays “Dona Flor y Sus Dos Maridos” and “Locos de Contento” at Manhattan’s Repertorio Espanol Theater and the plays “Let’s Speak Tango” and “Compania”. Valeria also choreographed for “Tango Glamour” an all women tango show that premiered in Teatro Solis, Uruguay’s main theater. Valeria received twice first prizes for her solos at Argentine dance festivals. Upon moving to the United States in 1995, she founded “TangoMujer”, the first all- female tango company with whom she toured extensively (1996-2006) being also a co-director and choreographer. As a dancer she has partnered stars of Tango Argentino, Tango Pasion and Forever Tango. In May 2009, she shared the stage with Placido Domingo as part of his “From My Latin Soul” show. She is proud to have performed for the president of Argentina at the Metropolitan Opera House in Lincoln Center, Other venues where she performed include Lincoln Center, Town Hall, Jacobs Pillow, Skirball Center, Herbst Theater (USA) Tanzhaus and Haus der Kulturen der Welt (Germany). She appeared in the television PBS documentary titled “Surrender Tango” by Marcia Rock and danced for the promotions of Julio Iglesias and YoYo Ma’s tango CDs.
