Class Description

Description

Discover cuprotype, an elegant nineteenth-century photographic printing technique that employs copper salts to generate beautifully nuanced prints with exceptional tonal depth. Like cyanotype, cuprotype relies on ferric ammonium citrate as its light-sensitive activator, making it equally practical to learn. What distinguishes cuprotype is its capability for extensive chemical toning, allowing you to develop a diverse color spectrum that includes warm golds, delicate pinks, rich copper hues, deep violets, and neutral tones.

This online course combines lectures, hands-on demonstrations, and collaborative discussions to lead you systematically through every stage of the cuprotype process. You will explore creating digital negatives, preparing chemical solutions, preparing paper surfaces, determining proper exposure times, and executing clearing and toning procedures to achieve both archival stability and desired chromatic effects. The course also introduces ferroblending, a creative hybrid methodology that integrates multiple photographic printing techniques. Upon completion, you will possess the fundamental competencies needed to independently continue producing cuprotype prints with confidence and skill.
