Miya Hisaka

Teaches at Joy of Motion Dance Center

Miya Hisaka carries the legacy of some of the world’s most renown dance leaders, trained by or danced with Alvin Ailey, Martha Graham, Eric Hawkins, Gene Hill Sagan, Mary Day, Gloria Contreras, and Kevin Iega Jeff. She has trained hundreds of dancers who are members of the Alvin Ailey, Dance Theatre of Harlem, Stuttgart Ballet, and American Ballet Theatre. A mover and shaker in the DC arts scene since l984, with a life commitment to diversity and the arts, she is also noted for her work in local municipal development and post war reconstruction work in Latin America. Ms. Hisaka is a graduate of Barnard College/Columbia University with a BA in Urban Studies, and an MPA from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University. For 28 years, she was Director of Dance/Faculty at Georgetown University, Central American University San Salvador, and San Domenico Prep School, CA; 15-year faculty at the Washington School of Ballet under the tutelage of Mary Day; and at the National School of Dance in El Salvador. 

Ms. Hisaka is Founder/Artistic Director of the DC Contemporary Dance Theatre, DC’s first multicultural dance company, were selected as cultural ambassadors by the State Department to represent the U.S. for a world tour for over a decade. Her work has been presented by the Kennedy Center, Smithsonian Institution, Central American Olympics, Cleveland Clinic’s Art & Medicine Institution, Ministry of Education of El Salvador, and Santa Clara University, among others. Recipient of the NEA Arts Fellow, and University of San Francisco’s Jesuit Fellowship. As an urban planner/member of the Mayor’s Task Force for Arts and Economic Development, Ms. Hisaka was integral in the redevelopment of the Gallery Row Arts, the 14th and U Arts District, and the first resident Company at the Lincoln Theatre. She was an Arts Fellow of the National Endowment for the Arts, recipient of numerous DC Mayor’s Arts Awards, and with a 30-year track record in funding. 

Currently, Ms. Hisaka is Founder/Artistic Director of DC Contemporary Dance Theatre/El Teatro de Danza Contemporanea, Ballet Mistress/Faculty at Catholic University, a Non-Profit Arts Consultant, and a certified Somatics/Pilates PT. Beyond Ms. Hisaka’s international recognition for her commitment to excellence in the concert dance, she is known for her unique ability for starting up and creating successful businesses and arts institutions from ground zero.
