What you'll learn in this photography class:

Wayfinding: Navigating the Physical and Graphic Space of the Photobook

It is not uncommon for a photographer or artist to have the desire to apply their images into the book format, but where do we begin this process? Further still, once we have created a layout, how do we go about printing and producing that which we see on the screen into a physical book?

Often daunting and confusing, knowing where to start can be paralyzing for many who dream of seeing their work spread across the pages of a book or zine. To materialize a book or zine is to create a very personal and tactile experience; with this program, we will explore and investigate both the graphic strategies and practical production methods for developing your project from photographs to finished maquette, self-published book or zine.

This online course will consist of weekly meetings that will focus on the individual aspects of the photobook with an emphasis on theory, practice and critique - during each section we will take time to dig deeper into the reading of images in the book form, the relationship of photographs to pages and dissecting the physicality of books as objects.

Critical Inquiry + Key Concepts:

We will examine both historically important photographic books and zines as well as contemporary artists’ use of the medium, drawing inspiration from those works to better understand how to approach our own projects. In conjunction we will explore and break down how those books are constructed; both materially and graphically to understand how to apply these elements in the most effective ways in orientating one’s own photographs within the vehicle of the book format.

Learning Objectives, Themes + Questions:

Through weekly online tutorials, assignments and group critiques over the 5-week course we will advise on constructing a finished layout of your photobook project and help prepare everything you will need in order to take the project to print. It will ask those on the course to think deeply and deliberately about the creative choices behind their intended outcome, supporting you in everything from editing, sequencing and design.

By dynamically applying these methods toward the execution of making an impactful layout, we will finally advise you through the possibilities of local and online printers and how to ultimately best realize your physical book.

This program will be taught by graphic designer Brian Paul Lamotte and photographer Andreas Laszlo Konrath. Together they founded the publishing imprint PWP (Pau Wau Publications) which produced over 50 publications and worked with over 65 photographic artists between 2008

Pre-requisites:

  • Completed Edited Project (or selection of images you intend to put into book form).
  • Access to Adobe InDesign or similar desktop publishing software. 3 of your favorite photobooks to share with the class.
