Class Description

Description

What you'll learn in this coffee class:

Joe Coffee's month-long barista course is a comprehensive coffee education experience focused on developing the knowledge and skills to work as a barista. Over the course of eight sessions, students will learn about the origins of coffee, develop their palates, and acquire the skills to create delicious, cafe-quality espresso beverages.

The class will begin with a seed to cup presentation, where we explore how specialty coffee is grown and processed, and what makes certain coffees more flavorful and complex than others. Students will learn the cupping process, which is an industry standard method for evaluating coffee.

Next, students will learn the proper technique to successfully operate an espresso machine and grinder. Through repetition and practice, students will be able to dial in their espresso and make all of the necessary adjustments to make sure their coffee taste sweet and balanced.

Once students are able to dial in, we will cover the science behind steaming milk to achieve the proper latte texture and temperature, and students will learn how to pour latte art using what's called a "free pour" technique.

Upon completion of the course, students will have the skills to set up their station, dial in, create espresso-based drinks, and clean and maintain espresso equipment. Our barista course students have ranged from budding enthusiasts to future professional baristas, and is the perfect educational opportunity for any coffee lover!

All materials are included and students are welcome to take photos and write down notes throughout the class. Attendees will also be able to purchase coffee and equipment from our Pro Shop at a 10% discount at any point during the course. No experience necessary.

Really great class, they even offered extra sessions on Wednesdays to help us practice the skills that we learned the previous classes. The instructors are also pretty easygoing and funny, which made the time go by really quickly. They honestly want you to get better to the point where pulling a shot is as routine as brushing your teeth or something. Definitely gives you a solid foundation for being a barista.

Hi there, will I get a proper certificate upon completion of this course?
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi there! Joe Coffee does provide a certificate upon completion of the course. However, I should mention that they are not accredited by the Specialty Coffee Association or such related bodies, so the certification would not be the equivalent of what such organizations would offer. Hope this helps!

Question from Imelda S.
How many days a week? From what time to what time? Do you teach how to roast coffee too? What lesson do we get during 1 month?
Answer from Kristle C. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi Imelda, Please see the schedule above. Since this class has multiple sessions, kindly click on the red bold line written "This course consists or multiple sessions, view schedule for sessions" for the full schedule to expand. This particular course covers the technique behind preparing espresso-based drinks, including dialing in and pulling a shot of espresso, steaming milk to proper texture and temperature, and pouring latte art. If you'd like to learn more about roasting coffee, we do offer a class that includes a tour of the roastery, an in-depth look at roasting, and a tasting of a single coffee roasted several different ways to illustrate the different techniques and approaches. We have this class scheduled at the end of September and will be offering this class once per month.
