Such a fun class and learned a lot about mixology! I went with my girlfriend for our anniversary, and it was a really great activity before dinner. The instructor was also really helpful and knew a lot about the subject.

TJ is a great instructor - loaded with personality. He made the class a lot of fun and our big group really enjoyed it and learned some great recipes and tips to make our own concoctions at home.

We had a terrific time! It was my friends bday and throughout the night he would make her a cute drink and even took pics with us! TJ was fun, knowledgeable, organically funny, and kept everyone engaged.

The class I purchased for my boyfriend’s birthday that I also attended was mostly a waste of time. Shake It Up: Mixology Basics was instructed by T.J., a friendly and charismatic individual who, sadly, was not a very effective teacher. It was blatantly clear in the first 15 minutes of the class that nothing was going to be taught. We spent 30-45 minutes going over everyone’s name, an utterly pointless exercise since this was just a 2 hour class that does not repeat; T.J. never once used anyone’s name anyway. Having had 11 years experience as a bartender in the city, T.J. showed us how to make an Old Fashioned and a margarita. We were then told to select a cocktail recipe printed on handouts to reproduce. T.J. did not oversee this process, but stood on the side and only responded to questions when approached. There was no skill being learned, or information shared. It was ultimately a test of how well you can read and follow directions. We were then allowed to “improvise” a drink based on the cocktail recipes with the liquors, mixers, and garnishes provided. Seeing as we had no real lesson on flavor profiles or ratios, this was an absolute mess and a waste of liquor. The last 25 minutes was equally wasteful with time because two individuals were selected for a “competition” to share their original creations with the class. If you were not selected, you just sat there and did nothing. Furthermore, since each team only made one drink, you couldn’t really enjoy the tasting it. I would recommend to anyone considering this class to print out some recipes they’re interested in, buy a cocktail shaker, some jiggers, and the necessary liquors instead of wasting your money and time on a subpar experience.
