Fondant 101

Learn the art of creating smooth, professional-looking fondant cakes in this intro class at the renowned NY Cake Academy. What you'll learn in this fondant class:

An intro to fondant, you'll learn how to properly crumb coat a cake, and then cover it with fondant to get that smooth, professional looking finish. This class will also cover an overview of how to make different variations of bows to top your cake. At the end of the class, each student will have their very own bow cake to take home.

Tools and Skills Covered: Decorating techniques that will be covered in this class include crumb coating a cake, covering a cake in fondant, and creating a fondant bow and ribbon.

Each student will be provided with a 5” cake that they will ice and decorate using fondant in the class. Students will create their own fondant covered bow cakes using the techniques that are covered within the class.

Class Policies

  • Classes will begin on time, so please be sure to allow enough time to arrive and prepare prior to the start of the class. The studio will be open to students 15 minutes prior to beginning of class to allow for set up. Classes occasionally run over time, please let the instructor know if you need to leave early or immediately at the end of class so they can plan for it.
  • We do not provide make-up classes.
  • Feel free to take pictures and post to social media. We do not allow video or voice recording. Please also refrain from sharing class materials or step-by-step pictures.
  • Cell phones should be silenced while in class. Please excuse yourself to the store area if you need to make or take a call.
  • All tools and equipment will be supplied for use during each class, unless otherwise noted in the class outline.
  • This is a commercial facility. We kindly ask that you follow our Health and Safety Certification standards required by law. Please wear closed toed shoes; flip-flops and other open sandals are not permitted. If you have long hair please keep it tied up for the duration of the class.
  • All classes are taught in English, unless otherwise specified.
  • Employees of the NY Cake Academy may take photographs of you; your photograph may be used for future class promotion or on our social media. Please let us know if you would prefer not to be photographed.

Refund Policy

Classes are not eligible for refunds, however classes are transferable.

  • Students may reschedule their class to an alternative date up to 4 business days prior to the class date for in-person classes.
  • All deposits & fees are forfeited for no shows.
  • We do not provide make-up classes.

The school reserve the right to cancel a class due to low enrollment up to 48 hours before the class date. The school reserve the right to change class schedules. If for any reason the school should cancel a class, a full refund will be offered to the student. However, we do not accept responsibility for any other expenses incurred such as hotel or airline cancellation penalties.

Cancellations or changes can be made through email at [email protected]. Please be sure to include the full name of the registered student, and class registration confirmation.

If a class is cancelled due to inclement weather, or other circumstance beyond our control (facility issues, power outages, etc.), we will contact you with as much advanced notice as possible by email or telephone, and issue you a refund to the original form of payment. We will make every effort to run the class as long as it is safe to do so. If we make the decision to run a class during inclement weather and you make the decision not to come, you will not be able to get a refund, we will offer only a credit for future use.

Credits are valid for a 12 month period of time.

In any event where a customer wants to cancel their enrollment and is eligible for a full refund, a 5% processing fee will be deducted from the refund amount.

    I liked the class, but I do have some experience with fondant and wanted to take the class to clarify doubts that I have about working with it, and my doubts were not resolved.

    I loved learning how to do the first step towards building that skill and adding it to my sculpting repertoire. It kind of brought me back to my younger days when I first started learning Home Economics in summer camp and in my boarding school years; also sort of brought out my inner child in a good way. At one point, I also actually thought: “Finally, a form of art that’s also edible!”
