Raj is a filmmaker, designer and urban planner interested in storytelling about the relationships of individuals to places, communities and social systems. He frequently works with public interest, community-based and urban development partners on projects that break down complex ideas, processes and information through animation, video and graphic design. Animation and video outreach partners have included GreenHomeNYC , The Youth Farm at the High School for Public Service, The Participatory Budgeting Project and LINC. As a Public Access Design Fellow at the Center for Urban Pedagogy, Raj worked with Damayan Migrant Workers Association on an animated video introduction to the issue of labor trafficking among Filipina domestic workers. While his professional practice focuses on digital animation tools, he is most inspired by handmade animation techniques, especially mixed-media approaches. In addition to DCTV, Raj has taught animation workshops at the Museum of the Moving Image and The Museum of the City of New York, in addition to having taught several levels of animation classes at the Charles River Creative Arts Program in Massachusetts. Raj holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Harvard University and a master’s degree in city planning, with a certificate in urban design, from MIT.
